Adobe is one of the worst of these companies. A few months back they decided to discontinue Animate and it pissed so many people off (me included) that they've seemingly backed off. I feel like it's just a matter of time before they decide to do more stupid shit.
Well said as always Scarlet. It was hard not to look at Sony's announcement & just feel that next level of dread setting in, where we understand what direction we're firmly heading in. I'm sure many other creatives out there have similar Adobe trauma as I do, & yet it's that exact type of experience & relationship that capitalists want us to have more broadly. Like Brandon said in his comment, it's only a matter of time before companies expand this belligerence even further & I doubt anyone is going to enjoy what that end product looks like (assuming the planet is still alive by then). Our relationship & connection to the means of production (& even the concept of ownership itself) is growing farther apart as time moves on, & capitalists intend on maintaining that trajectory (regardless of how unsustainable & inhumane it is). We've got our work cut out for us in bringing this machine to a halt, but I maintain the belief that, one day, this system will be dismantled & a better world will be built. I agree with all of this article in terms of the analysis of rentier capitalism. However, I think we all should be mindful of the fact that none of this bullshit is worth renting. None of it.
What’s more revealing in all this is the open, gaping wound that is a society reckoning with the fact that after a couple hundred years of capitalism and industrial progress, the only thing it has to show for itself is a lack of housing, shit that breaks down constantly, fucking hideous pastiche architecture, kevin smith movies they can’t own physically, and a healthcare system that relies on you be willing to drive to a strip mall and sit in a waiting room for 2 hours surrounded by other ill people watching judge Judy to be told that you indeed have a parasite that is otherwise preventable but alas, the adults in the room decided it was woke to be aware of it.
